Grandma had used the palm of her hand to keep her husband under control. The same firm palm disciplined her son, their dad. When their parents perished in a car accident, they came to live with grandmother. Maternal spankings became a normal part of their lives.
The young men hoped that her control would relax when they started in college. Grandma kept up a friendly correspondence with the professors. She even chatted on the telephone with their bosses when they took part-time jobs in the summer.
She knew everything. If the young men were ever rude, lazy, not performing well in class she had a solution: a mature woman’s hand of punishment.
Even as adults grandma spanks them. They are perfectly polite and always keep their shirt tucked. No shirking of any sort goes unpunished.
Grandma’s maternal discipline is stricter than one might expect. If one boy commits a sin, both are punished. That has caused the guys to police each other’s behavior.
Their biggest surprise is yet to come. Grandma has chosen young women for each of her grandsons to marry.
The brides-to-be believe in controlling male behavior as strongly as grandma. Spare the rod and spoil the husband is their motto. Their view of marriage is pragmatic: husbands are expected to work in respectable professions and earn a good salary. They enable the women to have children.
The two guys’ marital life will be chaste and sober. They will work hard at their job. And perform chores when they return home in the evening.
Frivolity and idleness will be forbidden.
Just like with grandma.
